Regardless of who she was or who she wanted to be;
For Hind el Achchabi corruption became her common denominator
People say you’re born innocent, but it’s not true. You inherit all kinds of things that you can do nothing about. You inherit your identity, your history, and like a birthmark that you can’t wash off… you have no truth to rewrite the story of where you came from. Yet, how often do we tell our own life story? How often do we adjust, embellish, or simply create fable? And the longer life goes on, the fewer are those around to challenge our account, to remind us that our life is not our life, merely the story we have told about our life. Told to others, but—mainly—to ourselves.
Hind el Achchabi was born with inherit identity and familial history. But Hind may have introduced a narrative fallacy to create flawed stories of her past to shape public perception of her world and our expectations of her reality. It appears that Achchabi’s claim of privileged lineage is less ancestral and more anecdotal. The facts seem to draw a picture of a poor but attractive girl who manipulated her way through a series of men with each a shallow moral posture, and little or no integrity. But, a fact is like a sack—it won’t stand up if it is empty. To make it stand up, first you have to put in all the reasons and feelings that caused it in the first place. And, facts are neutral until human beings add their own meaning to those facts. People make their decisions based on what the facts mean to them, not on the facts themselves. With this, let’s weigh as fact a brief conspectus of the men who forged and molded the myth that is the autobiography of Hind el Achchabi. Was it their moral depravity that created who she now is or was it their abhorrence that lent familiar comfort to a vacuous soul?
“She was one of my favorite whores”, “of average wit, but well organized”, recalled Khaled Al Tuwarijy. Hind el Achchabi met Al Tuwaijri as she was employed as in-flight service hostess on the aircraft of then Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah. In the early 2000’s when Achchabi considered Al Tuwaijri her boyfriend he was a top adviser to the Prince and would rise to Chief of the Royal Court of Saudi Arabia as Abdullah ascended to the throne. Khaled Al Tuwarijy was the highest ranking non-prince in the country until his disgrace and ouster by King Salman in January 2015. Al Tuwarijy came to symbolize immoral debasement, he was known as the “head of corruption”, “the black box”, and the “patron of the secularists”. He was also accused of seeking to “destroy the country and ruin the Royal Family.” Now sentenced to domestic exile, disgraced and scorned, his accounts frozen; Hind el Achchabi’s first brush with power and influence has been reduced to a minion, such as those that he once condescended to.
Ahmed el Assadi, was sentenced to 5 years in prison and ordered to pay $5.3 million in restitution, after pleading guilty March 2, 2011 to conspiracy to commit bank fraud, wire fraud, mail fraud, credit/debit card fraud and money laundering. Assadi operated a scheme to steal money and goods from merchants and financial institutions using unauthorized credit cards, along with false identification documents and counterfeit checks that were unlawfully produced. Assadi caused “skimming” equipment to be used by others at commercial businesses to capture credit and debit card account information and personal identification numbers. The data details was then used to manufacture counterfeit credit and debit cards, which were used to fraudulently obtain money from ATMs and money orders. Using multiple fictitious identities, Assadi opened bank accounts and credit card accounts, as well as private mail drop addresses. Assadi funded the bank accounts with counterfeit checks drawn on fictitious business entities and banks. Assadi laundered the proceeds of the criminal enterprise through other bank and credit card accounts, which were also established using fake identities. Ultimately, Assadi caused the funds to be transferred to accounts he controlled.
It was in the wee early months of 2007 when a pregnant Hind el Achchabi abandoned her newlywed husband, Ahmed el Assadi, when they had been married not more than 30 days. She had taken to Ahmed for refuge as she ran from the scorn of a concubine. She now aspired to dignity and the honor of a married woman. But Hind el Achchabi’s life script is unable to play to decorum. As but a few short months later, in the waning days of summer 2007, the pregnant newlywed prepared to marry another man.
Sadiq M. Marafi, was admitted to the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry in September 1993 and was then appointed to the permanent Mission of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations office in Geneva from 1996 until 2012. Marafi served as Secretary to the Counselor from 2007 to 2012. And, in September of 2013 he presented his credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna, to become the new permanent representative of Kuwait. Beyond his State service, Sadiq Marafi’s most daring appointment came in October of 2007 when in witness of her father, Marafi proposed marriage to the 8 month pregnant Hind el Achchabi-Assadi. This would be her second acceptance of engagement within 9 months.
A Royal Fleecing – To hear Achchabi tell the story, “all you need is someone close and with the confidence of the Emir”. Hind el Achchabi worked quickly to exploit her new husband’s position in Geneva to enable the couple to become the jeweler to Kuwaiti royalty. But the question would be raised: how could a junior foreign affairs staffer, and an unemployed, former flight attendant come to own a fleet of jet aircraft, a fleet of luxury yachts, and a real estate portfolio, all worth hundreds of millions of euros – simply by acting as a facilitating middleman to a single customer? Harry Winston, Cartier, Piaget, and Chopard: combined, did not net the value accumulated by Achchabi & Marafi over same period of operation.
The anatomy of a jewelry scam need not be unique or original. If you control the full extent of the supply chain from material sourcing to delivery, inspection and storage. And, are permitted do so without interference of audit – then you write yourself a blank check, with a limit only measured by the depth of the account. Of course the jewelry was marked-up fabulously beyond any industry standards, natural stones are replaced with synthetic, and items are invoiced and paid – but not delivered. Thousands of ounces of bullion believed to be in storage will lead to empty vaults. What makes the Achchabi/Marafi operation so remarkable is that they amassed more wealth in just a couple short years than all United States citizens lost to gold scams from 2001 to 2014 ($300mil.). This according to officials of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission testifying before a U.S. Senate Committee.
Morally bankrupt and ethically dark, Hind el Achchabi follows yet again without being original or unique. This time she borrows from the script of the infamous Raffaello Follieri and his Vatican property scam. Just as Follieri baited investors with false property speculation based on questionable Vatican connections and property access, Achchabi is doing the same with the promise of insider access to Moroccan property development through Mounir Majidi the personal secretary of King Mohammed VI. She tempts investors with the prospect of huge profits based on future land development, in partnership with Majidi and the King. In addition to speculative discounted pricing on soon to be developed property, it was explained that the Moroccan Government would be invoiced, for payments of hundreds of thousands of euros for each property deal. The payments would be described in the invoices as a broker’s fee, real estate consulting fee or real estate commission that was to go to a company that claimed it had been involved in the deal. The companies that collected the money would be fronts for Majidi’s alleged kickback scheme. Investors lose their money. And, again Hind el Achchabi would have her hand in looting another government treasury. The depth of Majidi’s participation is at this time unclear, as is his take of the investor’s funds.
Today, sill married to Sadiq Marafi, Hind el Achachbi now takes residence as the common-law wife of Mohsin Karim Bennani. Oddly enough, the couple lives in Marafi’s Greenwich, Connecticut house. The couple welcomed a new daughter in October. We’ll explore this relationship further in our next report.
